December 3, 2011  – Hilliard Darby @ Bishop Watterson

Hilliard Darby 35, Bishop Watterson 50

The Hilliard Darby Varsity Boys Basketball team opened the 2011-2012 season on the road at Bishop Watterson High School on Saturday night.  Darby jumped out to an 8-3 lead after one quarter on the strength of an intense defensive effort and a pair of three-pointers by Taylor Van Winkle and Nick Baker, sandwiched between was a steal and lay-up by Bryson Hook.  The Panthers matched their eight-point first quarter in the second, highlighted by a David Dennis floater at the first half buzzer, which cut Watterson’s lead down to four, 20-16.  The Eagles surged ahead early in the third quarter with a 9-0 run before Hook sliced his way into the lane for a bucket and subsequent free-throw for the Panthers.  Darby battled to cut the lead under double-digits on several occasions but eventually fell to the Eagles 50-35.  Van Winkle hit a three-ball in each stanza to lead the Panther scoring attack with 12 points, Hook added 8, while Cade Carter and Nic Baker scored 6 points apiece.  Dennis and Tavish Willie rounded out Darby’s scoring with 2 and 1 point, respectively.  Baker led the Panthers on the glass with 6 rebounds, while Clay Schmidt snared 5 caroms.  Darby is back in action Tuesday night, December 6th at Worthington Kilbourne High School.

Hilliard Darby JV 43, Bishop Watterson 56

The junior varsity boys basketball team opened the 2011-2012 season with a 56-43 loss on the road to the Bishop Watterson Eagles.  Watterson jumped out to an early 8-2 lead before Andy McFann and Nico Painter each hit three-pointers to tie it up for the Panthers.  Another quick start to the second quarter by the Eagles propelled them to a 33-22 halftime lead.  Darby continued to battle for the remainder of the game, once cutting the lead to eight on an Anthony Toler runner in the lane early in the fourth quarter.  But the Panthers would get no closer as Watterson won going away.  Darby was led in scoring by Toler, who had six field goals and four free-throws for a total of 16 points.  Painter added 14 points including four triples.  The Panther scoring was rounded out by McFann, Jalen Brown, Kaleb Sislowski, and Jordan Clark with 5, 3, 3, and 2 points, respectively.  Darby will travel to Worthington Kilbourne on Tuesday, December 6th, looking to earn their first victory.

Hilliard Darby Fr. 27, Bishop Watterson 46

On Saturday December 3rd, the Darby Freshman Boys Basketball Team (0-1) opened up their season at Bishop Watterson.  The Panthers started out strong taking the initial lead at the beginning of the game and finished the first quarter down 1, with the score 7 to 8.  The Eagles dominated the 2nd quarter outscoring the Panthers 17-5.  Entering the 3rd quarter down by 13 the Panthers increased their offense by scoring 11 but still gave up 15 points.  Better defense in the 4th keep the loss under 20, with the Final score of 46-27.  Carter Schmidt lead the Panthers with 6 points, Trevor Cox had 5 points and 3 assists, and Lorenzo McLaurin led the team with 6 rebounds while adding 4 points to the total.

 

 December 6, 2011 – Hilliard Darby @ Worthington Kilbourne

Hilliard Darby 44, Worthington Kilbourne 53

The host Worthington Kilbourne Wolves defeated the Panthers of Hilliard Darby High School on Tuesday night, December 6th, by a score of 53-44.  Darby fell behind early in the second quarter 22-8 before battling back to cut the deficit to nine points, at 28-19 after one half of basketball.  After an initial slow start, Darby launched a furious third quarter comeback.  Trailing 32-19, Bryson Hook, Clay Schmidt, and Taylor Van Winkle accounted for the scoring in a 12-4 run in which the Panthers turned their 13 point deficit into a 5 point hole to begin the fourth quarter.  But the valiant effort proved not to be enough, as Kilbourne held on for the nine-point win.  Darby was led by the solid all around performance of Bryson Hook.  The senior led the team with 15 points and 6 assists, as well as tying with Schmidt for the team lead in rebounds with 6.  Van Winkle hit three triples en route to his 11 point performance, and Schmidt added 10 points to his rebounding prowess.  The Panther scoring was rounded out by Cade Carter and Nic Baker with 5 and 3 points, respectively.  Darby will look for their first win on the young season, in their home-opener against Central Crossing High School on Friday, December 9th.

Hilliard Darby JV 55, Worthington Kilbourne 50

The Darby Panther Junior Varsity basketball team traveled to Worthington Kilbourne High School on Tuesday night and came from behind to secure a 55-50 victory.  The Panthers and Wolves battled to a 21 all tie at the half, before Kilbourne took a five-point lead into the final stanza at 37-32.  But it was the Panthers that owned the fourth quarter, outscoring Kilbourne 23 to 13.  Darby locked down the win by making seventeen of twenty free-throws in the fourth quarter.  Nico Painter and Anthony Toler both went a perfect seven of seven from the line on the night.  Darby received contributions from each player that stepped on the floor and were led by Toler’s 14 points.  Joey Schneider, Kaleb Sislowski, and Jordan Clark all scored 8 points apiece, while Painter added his 7 free-throws, good for his output in the ball game.  Andy McFann and Jalen Brown rounded out the Panther scoring with 6 and 4 markers, respectively.  Darby (1-1) will play their home-opener this Friday night, December 9th against Central Crossing High School.

Hilliard Darby Fr. 20, Worthington Kilbourne 45

On Tuesday December 6th, the Darby Freshman Boys Basketball Team (0-2) traveled to Worthington Kilbourne for their second game of the season.  It was a slow start for the Panthers who struggled throughout the first half only scoring 2 points while giving up 18 to the Wolves.  The Team battled hard in the 3rd to get back into the game scoring 13 points, their highest of the season, but remained down by 15 going into the 4th quarter.  The Wolves extended their lead during the fourth to finish with a score of 20-45.  Lorenzo McLaurin had 10 rebounds, Carter Schmidt had 6 points and Trevor Cox had 3 assists.  The freshmen look to get their first win during their home opener against Central Crossing on Friday, tip off at 4:30

 

December 9, 2011 – Hilliard Darby vs Central Crossing

The Darby Boys Basketball Team defended their home court with a 45-42 victory over visiting Central Crossing High School on Friday night.  The Panthers (1-2) held a 17-15 advantage at the half, and were able to hang on down the stretch, due in large part to their ability to take care of the basketball, as the Panthers had just six turnovers for the game.  Big plays down the stretch belonged to Taylor Van Winkle and Bryson Hook.  Van Winkle sliced through the Comet defense for a driving layin that gave the Panthers a 42-39 lead.  Hook buried three out of four free-throws down the stretch to secure the win.  Hook led Darby with 18 points and 8 rebounds, while Van Winkle contributed 15 points and 7 boards.  Nic Baker hit a pair of three-pointers, while Tavish Wille and Clay Schmidt chipped in three points apiece.  David Dennis played a solid floor game, dishing out four assists without having a turnover.  The Panthers are back in action next Friday night, December 16th at Upper Arlington High School for a showdown with the Golden Bears.

Hilliard Darby JV 47, Central Crossing 29

Hilliard Darby’s Junior Varsity Boys Basketball team won their second game in a row as they defeated visiting Central Crossing High School 47-29, in the team’s home opener.  Darby (2-1) fell behind by four points at the half, 26-22.  However, the Panthers came out of the locker room with a renewed defensive attitude, holding the Comets to just three second-half points.  Darby was led in scoring by Anthony Toler with 15 points, including 12 in the second half.  Jalen Brown and Kaleb Sislowski each scored eight, while Andy McFann and Jordan Clark contributed five points apiece.  The Panther total was rounded out by Zach Cowen, Joey Schneider, and Nico Painter, all with 2 points, respectively.  Darby travels to rival Upper Arlington on Friday night, December 16th.  The JV game tips at 6 pm., with the varsity to follow.

Hilliard Darby Fr. 36, Central Crossing 33

On Friday December 9th, the Darby Freshman Boys Basketball Team (1-2) was able to earn their first win with their home opener against the Comets of Central Crossing.  Darby started the game strong and had the early lead 10-7 after the first quarter.  During the second quarter the Panthers used aggressive defense to create more points and extended their lead to 11 finishing the half up 25-14.  The Panthers maintained this lead during the 3rd quarter with a score of 32-21 heading into the fourth.  The comets chipped away at the lead and were down by 1 with under a minute when Carter Schmidt made 2 foul shots to give the Panthers a 3 point lead with under 20 seconds in the game.  The Comets were unable to score and the Panthers won the game 36-33.  Leading the way were Carter Schmidt with 10 points and 6 Rebounds, Lorenzo McLaurin with 8 points and 10 rebounds, Trevor Cox with 8 points 4 steals and 3 assists, and Luke Geise with 7 points.  The Boys will be in action again on Friday December 16th at Upper Arlington.

 

 December 16, 2011 – Hilliard Darby @ Upper Arlington

Hilliard Darby 30, Upper Arlington 64

The Hilliard Darby Varsity Boys Basketball team traveled to Upper Arlington High School on Friday night to battle the Golden Bears.  Upper Arlington jumped out to an eighteen point halftime lead by using a swarming defense to convert Panther turnovers into high percentage scoring opportunities.  The Panthers battled all night but were overwhelmed by the quick start of the Golden Bears and could not get back into the game, eventually falling by a final score of 64 – 30.  The highlight of the night for Darby was a Jimi Booker breakaway dunk in the fourth quarter.  Booker finished with four points, a block, and a defensive rebound.  The Panthers in the scorebook were Taylor Van Winkle with 11, Bryson Hook with 7, Nic Baker with 5, Booker with 4, Clay Schmidt with 2, and Anthony Toler with 1.  Darby is back in action on Tuesday, December 20th when they travel to Dublin Coffman High School to take on the Shamrocks.

Hilliard Darby JV 47, Upper Arlington 42

The Darby JV Boys Basketball team won their third consecutive game on Friday night at Upper Arlington, by a score of 47 – 42.  The Panthers and Golden Bears battled throughout the contest, with no team holding a lead higher than six points at any time in the game.  Leading 42 – 40, Panther guard Anthony Toler was fouled for a one-and-one situation.  Toler hit both free-throws to push the lead out to four.  After a Golden Bear basket, Toler scored again on a slashing drive to the bucket.  On the ensuing possession, Andy McFann stepped in the path of an Upper Arlington player and took a game-clinching charge.  The win gave Darby (3-1) their third OCC win in as many tries.  Toler led the Panther scoring attack with a game-high 18 points.  Jalen Brown scored 8 points including a big bucket late in the game.  Joey Schneider handled the ball with precision while also scoring 6 points.  McFann and Kaleb Sislowski added five points apiece, while Jordan Clark and Zach Cowen rounded out the scoring with 3 and 2 points respectively.  Darby is back in action on Tuesday, December 20th at Dublin Coffman High School.

Hilliard Darby Fr. 25, Upper Arlington 45

On Friday December 16th, the Darby Freshman Boys Basketball Team (1-3) traveled to Upper Arlington to face a very good Golden Bears team.  The Panthers played tough during the first half of the first quarter but struggled to score and UA finally got their shooter free and hit 3 3pointers to finish the quarter up 18-2.  The Panthers struggled to stop another of their players in the 2nd quarter and finished the half down 10-34.  In the second half Darby stepped up their defense and won the half 15-11 while UA’s two scorers saved quarters to play 3 for the JV team.  Leading the way for the panthers were Trevor Cox with 9 points, Carter Schmidt with 6, and Andy Pompura with 5.  Lorenzo McLaurin lead the team with 11 rebounds.

 

December 20, 2011 – Hilliard Darby @ Dublin Coffman

Hilliard Darby 36, Dublin Coffman 65

The host Dublin Coffman Shamrocks defeated our Hilliard Darby Panthers on Tuesday night by a final score of 65-36.  The 29 point difference was not indicative of how close the majority of the game was, as the ‘Rocks held just an eight point lead at the half, and a nine point lead after three quarters.  The Panthers’ Clay Schmidt scored the first five points of the game for Darby, helping to establish the inside game.  David Dennis assisted on both of Schmidt’s first quarter buckets.  The Panthers fell behind by 13 points midway through the second quarter, but were quickly brought back by an eight-point spurt by way of a Nic Baker offensive rebound and subsequent put back, and a pair of Taylor Van Winkle three-point bombs.  Coffman pulled away in the fourth by outscoring the Panthers 27 to 7.  Darby was led in scoring by Van Winkle with 10, Bryson Hook with 9, and Schmidt with 7.  Dennis and Baker had four points each, while Anthony Toler and Tavish Wille each scored on a free-throw.  Darby is back in action after a one week layoff, when they will travel to Lancaster on Tuesday, December 27th.

Hilliard Darby JV 32, Dublin Coffman 43

The Hilliard Darby Junior Varsity Boys Basketball team fell to the host Dublin Coffman Shamrocks on Tuesday night by a final score of 43-32.  Darby (3-2) played from behind the entire evening, never holding a lead.  Turnovers and a stagnant offense hurt the Panthers, but it was not for lack of effort, as Darby staged a fourth-quarter comeback that cut the Shamrock lead to 5 at 34-29 with two and half minutes to play.  It was as close as the Panthers would get eventually falling behind by double digits and losing by eleven.  Darby was led in scoring by Nico Painter with 10 points.  Anthony Toler added 7, while Jalen Brown chipped in five.  Andy McFann (4), Kaleb Sislowski (2), Jordan Clark (2), and Zach Cowen (2), rounded out the Panther scoring attack.  Darby is off one week, and then will travel to Lancaster on the 27th of December.

Hilliard Darby Fr. 31, Dublin Coffman 59

On Tuesday December 20th the Panthers (1-4) traveled to Dublin Coffman.  The Panthers had a slow start while the Rocks came out shooting, hitting 3 3-pointers in the first quarter ending with Darby down 7-14.  The Freshmen fought back in the second quarter behind Luke Geise’s 6 points, Mo Museitif’s clutch 3, and tough defense.  The Panthers finished the quarter on a 7-0 run to close the half down by 6 with a score of 19-25.  The Panthers battled in the second half but couldn’t stop the sharp shooting of the Rocks that hit 3 3-pointers in each of the 2 final quarters in the second half while scoring a total of 25 more points.  The Panthers were only able to socre 12 more in the half and lost by score of 31-59.  Scoring for the Panthers were Luke Geise -10, Lorenzo McLaurin -9, Trevor Cox -4, Mo Museitif -3, Dwayne Oates, Kaden Calliari, and Josh Palsgrove -2.  Lorenzo also pulled down 8 rebounds.

 

December 27, 2011 – Hilliard Darby @ Lancaster

Hilliard Darby 75 , Lancaster 64

The Hilliard Darby Boys Basketball team traveled to Lancaster on Tuesday night and came away with their second win of the season, by a final score of 75-64.  Junior Nic Baker hit five first-half three-pointers to lead the Darby scoring attack.  Baker finished with a game-high 24 points, including a total of six three-pointers for the game.  The Panthers hit eleven triples for the game, and connected on 24 of 35 free-throw attempts.  Sophomore guard Taylor Van Winkle scored a season-high 21 points for the Panthers.  Freshmen David Dennis added 8 points and 7 assists.  Bryson Hook and Cade Carter scored seven points apiece.  Jimi Booker and Tavish Wille scored three points each, while Clay Schmidt rounded out the Panther scoring with 2 points, respectively.  Darby will look to make it two in a row on Friday night at Teays Valley High School.

Hilliard Darby JV 41 , Lancaster 32

The Hilliard Darby Boys JV Basketball team traveled to Lancaster on Tuesday night and came away with their fourth win of the season by a score of 41-32.  Darby (4-2) was led in scoring by Jalen Brown with 13 points and Anthony Toler with 11 points.  Andy McFann and Joey Schneider helped the effort with 7 points apiece.  Zach Cowen and Nico Painter rounded out the Panther scoring attack with 2 and 1 point, respectively.  Darby is back in action on Friday night, as they round out the 2011 portion of their schedule at Teays Valley High School.

Hilliard Darby Fr. 35, Lancaster 33

On Tuesday December 27th the Freshmen Boys Basketball Team (2-4) traveled to Lancaster to battle with the Golden Gales.  The Panthers had a strong start behind Trevor Cox’s 8 points to lead at the end of the 1st 9-6.  In the 2nd quarter the boys struggled to score and went into the half down 11-15.  A hard fought battle in the third left the Panthers still down by 3 with a score of 22-25.  In the fourth the Panthers were finally able to recapture the lead in the final 2 minutes and hold off the Gales who missed a 3 pointer at the buzzer leaving the score 35-33.  Trevor Cox finished the game with 17 points, Lorenzo McLaurin with 3 points and 10 boards, Josh Palsgrove with 8 points, Carter Schmidt with 5 points and Luke Geise with 2.  The Boys travel to Teays Valley for their last game before the New Year on Friday the 30th.

 

December 30, 2011 – Hilliard Darby @ Teays Valley

Hilliard Darby 49 , Teays Valley 48

The Hilliard Darby Varsity Boys Basketball team went on the road to defeat the Teays Valley Vikings by a score of 49-48, for their second win in as many games.  Darby battled back from an eight point half-time deficit on the strength of Nic Baker’s 16 points, and Taylor Van Winkle’s 13 points.  David Dennis scored 8 points and Cade Carter scored 6 for Darby (3-4).  Jimi Booker and Bryson Hook rounded out the Panther scoring attack with 4 and 2 points respectively.  Darby is back in action on Tuesday night when they host Thomas Worthington High School.

Hilliard Darby JV 32 , Teays Valley 29

The JV Darby Boys Basketball team defeated the Teays Valley Vikings on Friday night by a score of 32-29.  Although Darby had only six players available they were able to hold the Vikings under thirty points for the ball game.  On the strength of a stifling 2-3 zone defense, Darby was able to jump out to a 19-8 lead at the half.  Jordan Clark led the Panther scoring attack with 13 points, including four triples.  Jalen Brown scored 7 points and Andy McFann and Nico Painter rounded out the Panther attack with 6 points apiece.  Hilliard Darby (5-2) will return home to open the 2012 portion of their schedule on Tuesday night against Thomas Worthington.

Hilliard Darby Fr.  , Teays Valley

On Friday December 30th the Freshmen Boys Basketball Team (2-5) traveled to Teays Valley for a tough battle against the Vikings.  The Panthers took the early lead in the first quarter with some sharp shooting by Carter Schmidt and finished the 1st with a 13-10 lead.  Darby continued to score and held the Vikings to only 6 points in the 2nd to take a 23-16 into half time.  During the third the Vikings surged back with some solid shooting of their own scoring 17 in the quarter and taking the lead with a score of 31-33 going into the 4th quarter.  During the fourth the Panthers fought hard and tied the score in the closing minute but the Vikings were able to score in the closing 20 seconds and the Panthers were unable to create an opportunity extend the game to overtime.  Scoring for the Panthers were Carter Schmidt with 14, Trevor Cox with 13, Lorenzo McLaurin with 8 points and 12 rebouds, and 4 points for both Josh Palsgrove and Luke Geise.

 

January 3, 2012 – Hilliard Darby vs Thomas Worthington

Thomas Worthington traveled to Hilliard to take on our Darby Panthers on Tuesday night.  The Cards came away with a 60-44 victory.  Darby was led in scoring by sophomore guard Taylor Van Winkle’s 16 points, including four three-pointers.  Clay Schmidt scored 6 points, while Nic Baker and Tavish Wille chipped in five each.  Bryson Hook scored four points and David Dennis and Cade Carter scored three each.  The Darby scoring attack was rounded out by Jimi Booker with 2 points.  Darby (3-5) will travel to Westland High School on Friday night looking to earn their fourth victory of the season.

Hilliard Darby JV 45 , Thomas Worthington 36

The Hilliard Darby JV Boys Basketball Team started out 2012 on the right track with a 45-36 victory at home against Thomas Worthington High School.  Jalen Brown led the Panthers with 15 points, while Andy McFann chipped in with 11.  Jordan Clark scored 7 points, and Nico Painter and Joey Schneider split ten points evenly between them.  The Darby scoring attack was rounded out by Zach Cowen with 2 points.  Darby (6-2) won their third game in succession, the second such streak that they have completed this season.  The Panthers are back in action again when they travel to Westland High School on Friday, January 6th.

Hilliard Darby Fr.  35 , Thomas Worthington 37

On Tuesday January 3rd the Freshmen Boys Basketball Team (2-6) open the new year with their second home game of the year against Thomas Worthington.  It was a slow start for the Panthers who only scored 4 points for most of the first half.  In the last minute the Panthers stepped up their defensive pressure and were able to create to transition opportunities to double their score to 8 before the half.  With only a 4 point deficit to overcome the Panthers looked to get back on track in the second half.  Battling through the 3rd the Panthers were still down heading into the fourth 14-19.  The Panthers were able to hold the Cardinals to only 4 points in the quarter.  With the seconds ticking away and down by two the panthers were able to create an opportunity after a timeout and missed their first attempt but Carter Schmidt grabbed the rebound and quickly shot the ball as time expired.  The baseline shot was nothing but net as time expired and the teams would head to overtime.  Darby took the early lead in the first overtime up by 5 but missed some key free throws that allowed the Cardinals to tie the game again for a second overtime.  In the end the Panthers were edged out yet again down by four but scoring in the final 5 seconds to end the game with the loss 35-37.  Lorenzo McLaurin lead the Panthers with 10 points and 10 rebounds.  Trevor Cox finished with 10 points and Carter Schmidt with 9.  Dwayne Oates, Luke Geise and Josh Palsgrove each had 2.

 

January 6, 2012 – Hilliard Darby @ Westland

Hilliard Darby 50 , Westland 51

The Hilliard Darby Varsity Boy’s Basketball team traveled to Westland High School to play a very talented Cougar basketball team.  Darby took a 50-49 lead late in the game, but it proved to be Westland’s night as they came away with a buzzer-beating layin to steal a win away from the Panthers 51-50.  Taylor Van Winkle led the Panther scoring attack with 19 points including five three-pointers.  Nic Baker scored 16 and Bryson Hook added 12 points.  The loss drops Darby to 3-6 on the season.

Hilliard Darby JV 49 , Westland 41

The Darby JV Boy’s basketball team made it four wins in a row when they traveled to Westland Friday night and defeated the Cougars by a score of 49-41.  The Panthers rode the hot-hand of Jalen Brown early and the steady play of Joey Schneider and Andy McFann the rest of the way to ensure the win.  Brown led all scorers in the contest with 17 points, Schneider added 10, and McFann had 8.  Nico Painter scored 7, Jordan Clark 6, and Zach Cowen rounded out the scoring with a point.  The win moves Darby to 7-2 on the year.

Hilliard Darby Fr. 27 , Westland 30

On Friday January 6th the Freshmen Boys Basketball Team (2-7) traveled to Westland for a battle with the cougars.  Westland got out to a strong start outscoring the Panthers 11-7 in the first.  In the second the Panthers responded by holding the cougars to 2 points and tied the game at 13 to end to first half.  The Panthers took the lead in the 3rd going into the 4th up 20-17.  The Cougars were able to regain the lead at the end with the Panthers having opportunities to tie the game in the closing seconds but were unable to convert and ended the game down 27-30.  Leading the way for the Panthers were Carter Schmidt with 10 points and 7 rebounds, Lorenzon McLaurin with 7 points and 13 rebounds, Trevor Cox with 5 points, Josh Palsgrove with 3 points, and Mo Museitif and Andy Landers with 2 each.

At the halfway point for the Season the Panthers are 2-7 but have made great strides in the last 4 games, averaging 35 points while opponents are averaging 36.  The Freshmen boys continue to work hard and look to improve more during the second half of the season.  Leading the Panthers are Trevor Cox with 9.3 points a game and just under 3 assists per game, Carter Schmidt with 7.3 points per game and just under 4 rebounds per game, and Lorenzo McLaurin with 6.7 points a game and 10 rebounds per game.  Of the 12 players on the team 11 have scored 2 points or more this season.

January 7, 2012 – Hilliard Darby vs Oak Hills

For as much as Darby felt the agony of defeat twenty-four hours ago, they equally felt the thrill of victory tonight as they knocked off a tough Cincinnati Oak Hills team by a final score of 55-52.  The Panthers trailed by fourteen points at the half and sixteen early in the third quarter before making beginning their pursuit of the lead.  Darby finally got that lead when senior Bryson Hook drove the lane and finished with a left-handed finger roll to give the Panthers a 54-52 advantage.  Hook added a free-throw and the Panthers got a stop on defense to seal the victory.  Taylor Van Winkle upped his Central Ohio leading free-throw prowess to 96 percent on two pressure-packed free-throws to tie the game at 52 before Hook’s heroics.  David Dennis scored a career-high 14 points including four three-pointers, while Clay Schmidt added 8 points to the Darby cause.  But the man of the night was Hook, who poured in a game-high 20 points, including six assists.  Darby (4-6) is back in action when they host rival Hilliard Davidson on Friday, January 13th.

Hilliard Darby 47 , Oak Hills 38

The Hilliard Darby Boy’s JV Basketball team won their fifth consecutive game as they defeated Oak Hills High School by a score of 47-38.  The Panthers led by two at the break before turning on the defensive pressure and pulling ahead for the nine-point victory.  Joey Schneider led the Panther scoring attack with 14 points.  Jalen Brown and Andy McFann added nine points each, while Jordan Clark, Nico Painter, and Zach Cowen chipped in with 7, 5, and 3 points, respectively.  Darby (8-2) will be back in action when they host rival Hilliard Davidson on Friday night, January 13th.

January 13, 2012 – Hilliard Darby vs Hilliard Davidson

 

Hilliard Darby 48 , Hilliard Davidson 52

The rivalry between Darby and Davidson lived up to its hype as the Panthers and Wildcats traded punches Friday night, before Darby eventually fell in the final minutes, 52-48.  On the strength of Darby senior Bryson Hook’s 13 first-half points, it was the Panthers who jumped out to an early lead at 28-16.  Davidson answered with an 8-2 run to close their halftime defecit to just six points at 30-24.  Darby struggled to score the basketball in the second half, managing just 18 points, but still gave themselves opportunities to win or tie the game.  Darby’s last two losses have been by a combined total of five points.  Hook led the Panthers with 17 points for the game, while Clay Schmidt added 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.  Schmidt’s effort was the first double-double by a Darby player this season.  The Panthers (4-7) are back in action on Tuesday, January 17th, when they host Marysville in an OCC inter-conference matchup

Hilliard Darby JV 46 , Hilliard Davidson 39

Hilliard Davidson’s Wildcats came into Darby’s Panther Pit and were sent away with a 46-39 loss, on Friday night.  Darby’s JV improved to 9-2 with the win, including their sixth straight victory.  The Panthers played with the lead throughout the game, never trailing in the contest.  Darby was led by Anthony Toler’s 11 points.  Nico Painter scored 9 points, all on three pointers, including a high-arching thirty footer to beat the third quarter buzzer.  Jalen Brown and Joey Schneider added eight points apiece, while Andy McFann and Jordan Clark rounded out the Panther scoring attack with 6 and 4 points, respectively.

On Friday January 13th the Freshmen Boys Basketball Team (2-8) hosted the Davidson Wildcats.  The Wildcats started strong outscoring the Panthers 16-1.  The Panthers responded in the 2nd scoring 11 and holding the Wildcats to 7, to finish the half down 12 to 23.  The Panthers added 15 more in the 3rd but Davidson added 16 to their score.  In the 4th the Panthers continued to battle and had the lead cut to 4 in the closing 2 minutes.  That was as close as they would get scoring 15 in the 4th while holding Davidson to 9 with the final score 42-48.  The Panthers were lead by Lorenzo McLaurin 17 points and 10 rebounds and Carter Schmidt with 10 points and 5 rebounds.  Also scoring for the Panthers were Luke Geise and Josh Palsgrove with 6 each, Mo Museitif with 2, and Dwayne Oates with 1.

 

January 17, 2012 – Hilliard Darby vs Marysville

The visiting Marysville Monarchs defeated our Hilliard Darby Panthers last night by a score of 66-54.  Darby jumped out to an early 13-12 lead after the first quarter, but played from behind the remainder of the game.  Junior Clay Schmidt recorded his second consecutive double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while fellow junior Nic Baker scored a team-high 18 points, including four three-pointers.  Darby fought back to cut the Monarch lead to two points at 44-42 early in the fourth quarter but would get no closer than six, the rest of the way.  With the loss, the Panthers fall to 4-8 overall on the season.  Darby will host Worthington Kilbourne this Friday night, January 20th. 

Hilliard Darby JV 44, Marysville 49

The Hilliard Darby Junior Varsity Boys Basketball team fell to visiting Marysville by a score of 49-44.  The Panthers fell behind by eight points early in the contest before a 9-4 spurt cut the defecit to 19-16 at the intermission.  Darby battled through the waning seconds of the game, cutting the lead to three on a Jordan Clark three-pointer with twenty seconds remaining in the game but were unable to get any closer.  Darby was led by Anthony Toler’s 11 points.  Jalen Brown and Nico Painter added seven each, while Clark and Joey Schneider scored 6 points apiece.  Andy McFann and Kaleb Sislowski rounded out the Panther scoring attack with 4 and 3 points, respectively.  Darby (9-3) is back in action on Friday night, when they host Worthington Kilbourne.

Hilliard Darby Fr. 35 , Marysville 36

On Tuesday January 17th, the Freshman Boys Basketball Team (2-9) hosted the Marysville Monarchs.  The first quarter was tied at 4 until Marysville hit a 3 at the buzzer to take the lead.  The Panthers battled hard in the 2nd with a strong 6 point quarter from Luke Geise but the Monarchs were able to hit back to back 3’s early in the quarter to extend their lead and ended the half up 13-17.  The Panthers struggled to stop Marysville in the 3rd entering the 4th down 22-29.  The Panthers continued to fight and cut the lead to four in the closing minute, and a 3 pointer by Dwayne Oates cut the lead to 1 with half a second left.  The Panthers used a final timeout to stop the clock and tried for the miracle stop and shot at the end but were unable to convert, losing 35-36.  The Panthers were lead by Lorenzo McLaurin’s 15 points and 8 rebounds, Luke Geise’s 10 points, Dwayne Oates’ 6 points and Carter Schmidt’s 4.

 

January 20, 2012 – Hilliard Darby vs Worthington Kilbourne

The Hilliard Darby Varsity boys basketball team fell to visiting Worthington Kilbourne on Friday night by a score of 58-40.  Darby held a 15-13 advantage after the first stanza, but fell behind shortly thereafter and never regained the lead.  Darby was led in scoring by Clay Schmidt and Taylor Van Winkle, with 10 and 9 points, respectively.  Darby falls to 4-9 with the loss.

 

Hilliard Darby JV 49 , W. Kilbourne 41

The Junior Varsity Panther boys basketball team got back in the win column on Friday night with a 49-41 home victory over visiting Worthington Kilbourne.  The win marked the second time this season that Darby (10-3) has beaten the Wolves from Worthington Kilbourne.  The Panther effort was led by Jalen Brown’s 12 points and Nico Painter’s 11.  Anthony Toler scored 7 points and Zach Cowen scored 6.  Joey Schneider, Kaleb Sislowski, and Andy McFann scored 5, 4, and 4 points respectively to round out Darby’s scoring attack.

 

Hilliard Darby Fr. 37 , W. Kilbourne 46

On Friday January 20th the Freshmen Boys Basketball Team (2-10) hosted Worthington Kilbourne.  A slow start for the Panthers allowed the Wolves to jump out to an early 18-5 lead by the end of the 1st quarter.  The Panthers found a rhythm offensively through a great quarter by Lorenzo McLaurin with 8 of the teams 12 points.  They still allowed a tough Kilbourne team to score 14 more points and finished the half down 17-32.  A great effort in the 3rd allowed the Panthers to chip away at the lead and finish the quarter down by 9 with a score of 31-40.  The Wolves stalled for most of the 4th trying to prevent the Panthers from cutting into the lead any further.  Both teams scored 6 apiece for a final of 37-46.  Lorenzo McLaurin finished with a team high 18 points and 10 rebounds.  Carter Schmidt added 9 points, Josh Palsgrove finshed with 4, Dwayne Oates added 3, Luke Geise and Andy Landers had 2 & 1 respectively.

 

January 24, 2012 – Hilliard Darby @ Central Crossing

The Darby Varsity boys basketball team traveled to Central Crossing High School and came away with a 55-49 victory over the Comets.  Darby fought back from a four point halftime deficit to take a 39-38 lead after three quarters of play.  The Panthers played solid basketball in the fourth quarter to secure the win.  Darby (5-9) was led by sophomore Taylor Van Winkle’s 24 points including 13 in the fourth quarter and 20 for the second half.  Senior Bryson Hook tossed in 11 points and had 7 rebounds and 5 assists.  The scoring was rounded out by Nic Baker, Cade Carter, David Dennis, and Clay Schmidt with 8, 5, 4, and 3 points, respectively.  Darby will host rival Upper Arlington on Friday night, January 27th.

 

Hilliard Darby JV 31 , Central Crossing 17

The Hilliard Darby Junior Varsity Boys Basketball team traveled to Central Crossing High School and came away with a 31-17 win.  The Panthers jumped out to a 19-6 halftime lead and were able to maintain the advantage throughout the remainder of the ballgame.  Darby (11-3) had eight players score in the game.  Darby will host rival Upper Arlington on Friday night, January 27th. 

 

Hilliard Darby Fr. 50 , Central Crossing 36

On Tuesday January 24th the Freshmen Boys Basketball Team (3-10) traveled to Central Crossing.  A close battle in the 1st finished with the Panthers down 8-7.  With 1:14 to go in the 2nd quarter the Comets called a timeout after a 13-7 run by the Panthers.  The Panthers continued to stay energized & scored the final 4 points of the half extending their lead to 24-17.  During the 3rd the Comets made a push to cut the lead but the Panthers allowed them to score only 2 more than them and kept the lead 33-26 heading into the final quarter.  Through great team basketball the Panthers were able to extend the lead and secure the victory scoring 17 points and holding the Comets to 10 in the 4th, finishing the game with the score 50-36.  A balanced attack for the Panthers was lead by Lorenzo McLaurin’s 11 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, and 3 blocks.  Also scoring for the Panthers were Luke Geise – 9, Carter Schmidt and Trevor Cox – 8, Dwayne Oates – 7, Josh Palsgrove – 4, and Mo Museitif – 3.

 

 

 

January 27, 2012 – Hilliard Darby vs Upper Arlington

 

 

 

Hilliard Darby 45, Upper Arlington 53

The Hilliard Darby Varsity Boys Basketball Team fought valiantly in a tough 53-45 loss to league leading Upper Arlington on Friday night.  The Panthers held a ten point advantage at 37-27 with about seven minutes to play in the ball game.  The rest of the game belonged to Upper Arlington’s Carter Smith who accounted for 14 of UA’s 26 fourth-quarter points.  Darby was led in scoring by sophomore Taylor Van Winkle with 19 points, including four three-pointers.  Senior Bryson Hook tallied 11 markers, while junior post Clay Schmidt and junior guard Cade Carter had 11 and 9 rebounds, respectively.  Darby (5-10) has a week to prepare for Dublin Coffman, who comes into the Panther Pit on Friday night, February 3rd.

Hilliard Darby JV32, Upper Arlington43

The Darby Junior Varsity basketball team defeated visiting Upper Arlington on Friday night, by a score of 31-24.  The game matched two physical teams and was the return game of a fierce battle in December, which was also won by the Panthers.  Jalen Brown led the Panther scoring attack with 15 points.  Darby (12-3) has a week of preparation for visiting Dublin Coffman on Friday, February 3rd.  Coffman beat Darby 43-32, the first time the two teams met on December 20th.

 

Hilliard Darby Fr. , Upper Arlington

On Friday January 27th the Freshmen Boys Basketball Team (3-11) hosted the Golden Bears of Upper Arlington.  During the first quarter the panthers were able to score 11 points, their second highest total for a first quarter this year, but allowed U.A. to score 17.  In the second the Panthers held the Golden Bears to 9 points but were unable to get a basket for themselves.  The scoring drought continued into the 3rd with the panthers only scoring 2 points and giving up 10.  They were able to outscore their opponents 6-5 in the 4th but the game was to far out of reach for a comeback.  Lorenzo McLaurin lead the panthers with 15 points and 14 rebounds.  Luke Geise added 3 points and Dwayne Oates had 1.

 

February 3, 2012 – Hilliard Darby vs Dublin Coffman

The Panther Varsity boy’s basketball team lost at home to visiting Dublin Coffman on Friday night by a score of 74-42.  Darby struggled to score the ball early in the contest, falling behind 32-13 at the half.  The Panthers were led in scoring by senior Bryson Hook with 14 points.  Darby (5-11) travels to Thomas Worthington High School on Tuesday night, February 7th for a battle with the Cardinals.

Hilliard Darby JV 38, Dublin Coffman 43

The Hilliard Darby Junior Varsity Boys Basketball team fell to visiting Dublin Coffman on Friday night by a score of 43-38.  The Panthers managed just 5 points at the half and trailed by 22 to the Shamrocks.  However, a second half surge led by Jalen Brown (18 points) and Nico Painter (11 points) got Darby to within three points before their eventual defeat.  The Panthers (12-4) travel to Thomas Worthington on Tuesday, February 7th for a showdown with the Cardinals

Hilliard Darby Fr. 23, Dublin Coffman 45

On Friday February 3rd  the Freshmen Boys Basketball Team (3-12) hosted the Rocks of Dublin Coffman.  It was 7 to 12 after the first quarter and 9 to 22 by half time, leaving the Panthers to have to battle from behind throughout the 2nd half.  A better 3rd quarter allowed Darby to only be down by 14 heading into the 4th.  A few 3 pointers early in the quarter sealed the game for the Rocks and the Panthers lost the match 23-45.  Lorenzo McLaurin scored  8 points and had 10 rebounds, Trevor Cox finshed with 5 points Luke Geise and Carter Schmidt each had 4 points, and Dwayne Oates had 2.

 

February 7, 2012 – Hilliard Darby @ Thomas Worthington

The Hilliard Darby Varsity Boys Basketball team traveled to Thomas Worthington on Tuesday night and fell to the Cardinal by a score of 60-42.  Darby was led in scoring by senior Bryson Hook who tallied a game-high 17 points, to go along with 6 assists.  Taylor Van Winkle added 10 points to the Panther charge.  Darby (5-12) hosts Westland on Friday night, February 10th.

On the strength of a Joey Schneider offensive rebound and put-back with thirty seconds remaining in the game, the Hilliard Darby JV Boy’s basketball team defeated host Thomas Worthington 50-48.  Darby improved their record to 13 wins against 4 losses on the season.  Jalen Brown scored 15 points to lead the Panther scoring attack.  He was followed by Anthony Toler (9), Schneider (8), Nico Painter (8), Jordan Clark (6) and Zach Cowen (4).  Darby hosts Westland on Friday night, February 10th.

Hilliard Darby Fr. 29 , Thomas Worthington 47

On Tuesday February 7th the Freshmen Boys Basketball Team (3-13) visited Thomas Worthington.  It was close after the first with the panthers down 10-11.  The Cardinals extended their lead by 7 in the second and by 15 more in the third.  The panthers were able to chip into the deficit by outscoring the Cards 10 to 6 in the forth and finished with the score 29-47. Lorenzo McLaurin had 9 points and 10 rebounds, Trevor Cox had 5, Kaden Calliari and Luke Geise each had 3,4 others had 2 and one had 1 to round out the scoring.

 

February 10, 2012 – Hilliard Darby vs Westland

The Darby Boys Varsity Basketball Team fell at home this evening to visiting Westland by a score of 57-48.  The Panthers were led in scoring by Sophomore Taylor Van Winkle with 14 points.  Senior Bryson Hook added 12 points to the Panther charge.  Darby (5-13) plays host to Jonathon Alder on Saturday night.

The Hilliard Darby JV Boys Basketball team improved their record to 14 wins and 4 losses with their 40-34 victory over visiting Westland on Friday night.  Darby was led in scoring by Jalen Brown with 14 points.  Nico Painter (10), Joey Schneider (8), Anthony Toler (6), and Jordan Clark (2) rounded out the Panther scoring attack.  Darby hosts Jonathon Alder on Saturday night!

Hilliard Darby Fr. 49 , Westland 30

On Friday the 10th the Freshmen (4-13) hosted the Westland Cougars.  A strong start put the panthers ahead 14-3 after the 1st.  The Panthers let the Cougars closed the gap in the second going into half time with an 8 point lead.  Darby would control the second half scoring 27 while holding their opponents to 16.  The final score was 49-30 and the panthers were lead by Josh Palsgroves 13 points.  Dwayne Oates scored 8, Trevor Cox & Clay Schmidt 6,Lorenzo Mclaurin had 5 points and 11 rebounds.  Andy Landers and Mo Museitif added 4 each and Drew Deshuk had 3. Andy Pompura also had 10 rebounds.

 

 February 17, 2012 – Hilliard Darby @ Jonathan Alder

Hilliard Darby 51, Jonathan Alder 61

State-ranked Jonathon Alder traveled to Darby High School on Saturday night for a non-conference tilt with the Panthers.  The Pioneers came away with a 61-51 win.  Darby was led in scoring by Bryson Hook, who tallied 16 points in his final home game for the Panthers.  Junior Nic Baker scored 12 points, while sophomore Taylor Van Winkle added 11.  Darby will finish up the regular season on Friday night, February 17th at Hilliard Davidson.

Hilliard Darby JV26 , Jonathan Alder 24

The Hilliard Darby JV Boys Basketball team improved their record to 15 wins and 4 losses with their 26-24 victory over visiting Jonathon Alder on Saturday night.  Darby was led in scoring by Jalen Brown with 8 points.  Andy McFann, Joey Schneider, and Jordan Clark each added 5 points to the Panther cause.  Zach Cowen accounted for 3 points in the Panther win.  Darby will travel to Davidson on Friday night, February 17th for the final game of their season.

Hilliard Darby Fr. 33 , Jonathan Alder 28

A great second quarter (16-2)was enough to hold off Jonathan Alder on Friday February 11th in the freshmen game at Darby High School.  The final score was 33-28 and this was their second win in 2 days of games.  They are now 5-13 with one regular season game left to play at Davidson on the 17th.  Leading the panthers were Trevor Cox with 11 points and 5 steals, Mo Museitif and Luke Geise each with 5, and Lorenzo McLaurin with 7 points and 12 rebounds.

 

February 17, 2012 – Hilliard Darby @ Hilliard Davidson

Hilliard Darby 50 , Hilliard Davidson 43

The Darby Panther Varsity basketball team defeated cross-town rival Hilliard Davidson on Friday night by a score of 50-43.  The Panthers trailed 36-26 about midway through the third quarter before going on a 24-7 run to end the game.  Big shots were hit by many in the run, with contributions from juniors Jimi Booker, Clay Schmidt, and Nic Baker.  Senior Bryson Hook scored a driving baseline layin to give Darby the lead at 38-36.  Sophomore Taylor Van Winkle hit two three’s during the streak and freshmen David Dennis knocked down six consecutive clutch free-throws.  The Panthers were also able to get stops in the final minutes to secure the victory.  Baker, Dennis, and Van Winkle all hit double figures, scoring 12, 12, and 10 points, respectively to help aide in the win.  The Panthers begin Division One OHSAA tournament play Friday night, February 24th, against OCC rival Worthington Kilbourne at Reynoldsburg High School.

The Hilliard Darby Junior Varsity Boys Basketball team held on for a 30-29 victory over Hilliard Davidson on Friday night in both teams’ season finale.  Darby finished off a fine season in which the team won 16 out of 20 games.  The Panthers were led in scoring, on this night by Anthony Toler with 14 points.
